Cricket — India's most-followed sport.

Major tournaments:

  • ICC Men's Cricket World Cup: 50-over format, held every 4 years.
    • India won: 1983 (Kapil Dev), 2011 (M.S. Dhoni).
  • ICC Men's T20 World Cup: held every 2 years.
    • India won: 2007 (Dhoni), 2024 (Rohit Sharma — beat South Africa).
  • ICC Champions Trophy: also for top teams.
  • Asia Cup: South Asian championship.
  • Test cricket: longest format. World Test Championship (WTC) since 2019.

IPL (Indian Premier League): T20 franchise league, started 2008. 10 teams. CSK and MI have most titles (5 each as of 2024). 2024 champions: Kolkata Knight Riders. 2025: ?

Indian cricket icons:

  • Sachin Tendulkar — "God of Cricket". 100 international centuries. Bharat Ratna 2014.
  • Sunil Gavaskar — first to 10,000 Test runs.
  • Kapil Dev — 1983 WC-winning captain.
  • M.S. Dhoni — won all 3 ICC trophies (T20, ODI, Test Mace).
  • Virat Kohli — 70+ international centuries; one of greatest batters.

Hockey — India's national sport (though no official designation).

  • Tokyo 2020 (held 2021): bronze in men's hockey, ending 41-year medal drought.
  • Paris 2024: bronze again.
  • Indian Women's hockey: 4th at Tokyo 2020.

Football:

  • I-League and Indian Super League (ISL) — top tier.
  • AFC Asian Cup, FIFA World Cup (India hasn't qualified for FIFA WC since 1950).
  • Sunil Chhetri — captain, top scorer; retired May 2024.

Tennis:

  • Leander Paes: 18 Grand Slam doubles/mixed titles; Indian record.
  • Mahesh Bhupathi: multiple GS titles.
