Indian Railways (IR) is one of the largest railway networks in the world.

Key facts:

  • First train: April 16, 1853 — Bombay (Bori Bunder) to Thane (~34 km). Three steam locomotives: Sahib, Sindh, Sultan. Carried 400 passengers.
  • Total route length: ~68,000 km (as of 2026).
  • Number of stations: ~7,300.
  • Daily passengers: ~24 million.
  • Daily freight: ~3 million tonnes.
  • Employees: ~1.2 million — among the world's largest civilian employers.
  • HQ of Indian Railways: Rail Bhavan, New Delhi.
  • Ministry: Ministry of Railways.
  • Current Railway Minister: Ashwini Vaishnaw (since July 2021).

  • Vande Bharat Express: indigenous semi-high-speed train (top 160 km/h). First launched Feb 2019.
  • Rajdhani Express: connecting capitals to Delhi (since 1969).
  • Shatabdi Express: intercity day trains (since 1988).
  • Duronto Express: non-stop trains.
  • Garib Rath: budget AC trains.
  • Tejas Express: business-class day trains.
  • Antyodaya Express: long-distance unreserved.
  • Humsafar: 3AC fully air-conditioned.
  • Mail/Express, Superfast, Passenger.

  • Longest train run: Vivek Express (Dibrugarh, Assam to Kanyakumari, TN) — 4189 km, ~74 hours.
  • Longest platform: Hubballi Junction (Karnataka) — 1507 m. (Previously Gorakhpur held the record.)
  • Highest rail bridge: Chenab Bridge in J&K (359 m above river) — opened 2024.
  • Longest tunnel: Pir Panjal (J&K) — 11.2 km (rail tunnel). (Atal Tunnel is road.)
  • Highest railway station: Ghum (West Bengal, 2258 m, on Darjeeling Himalayan Railway).

Train numbering convention (5-digit):

  • First digit: train type (1=Rajdhani/Mail, 2=Superfast, 6=Memu, 9=Holiday-spcl).
  • Second-fifth: route info.

  • Indian Railway Institute of Mechanical & Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE) — Jamalpur.
  • Indian Railway Institute of Civil Engineering (IRICEN) — Pune.

  • Vande Bharat 2.0 (newer model, March 2023) — sleeper version under development.
  • Bullet train project: Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (under construction; target 2026–28); India's first; based on Japanese Shinkansen technology.
  • Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC):
    • Eastern DFC (Ludhiana to Dankuni, ~1875 km).
    • Western DFC (Dadri to JNPT, Mumbai, ~1506 km).
  • Mission Raftaar: increase average speeds.
  • Mission Electrification: 100% electrification target on broad-gauge by 2024-25 (largely achieved).
  • Kavach: Indian indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system; being deployed across major routes.
