Key facts:
- First train: April 16, 1853 — Bombay (Bori Bunder) to Thane (~34 km). Three steam locomotives: Sahib, Sindh, Sultan. Carried 400 passengers.
- Total route length: ~68,000 km (as of 2026).
- Number of stations: ~7,300.
- Daily passengers: ~24 million.
- Daily freight: ~3 million tonnes.
- Employees: ~1.2 million — among the world's largest civilian employers.
