FLAGSHIP MODERN RAILWAY PROJECTS:


1. DEDICATED FREIGHT CORRIDORS (DFC):

Two corridors of standalone freight tracks (separate from passenger lines) for faster freight:

Eastern DFC (EDFC):

  • Route: Ludhiana (Punjab) → Dankuni (West Bengal).
  • Length: 1,856 km.
  • Status: Mostly complete (operational from 2021).
  • Cost: ~₹50,000 crore.
  • Funded by: World Bank.

Western DFC (WDFC):

  • Route: Dadri (UP) → Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (Mumbai).
  • Length: 1,506 km.
  • Status: Final stretches complete by 2026.
  • Cost: ~₹80,000 crore.
  • Funded by: JICA (Japan).

Future DFCs planned:

  • East Coast DFC (Kharagpur–Vijayawada).
  • East-West DFC (Bhusawal–Kolkata).
  • North-South DFC (Itarsi–Vijayawada).
  • Capacity unlocked: ~5x faster freight, doubles cargo throughput.

2. HIGH SPEED RAIL (HSR) / BULLET TRAIN:

Mumbai-Ahmedabad HSR:

  • 508 km — India's first HSR.
  • Design speed: 320 km/h. Travel time: ~2 hr (vs current 8 hr).
  • 12 stations.
  • Trains: Shinkansen E5 (Japanese tech transfer).
  • Stations like Sabarmati (Ahmedabad), Surat, Vadodara, Vapi, Boisar, Thane, BKC (Mumbai).
  • Undersea tunnel: 21 km (longest in India) near Thane.
  • Funded by: 81% JICA soft loan @ 0.1% interest, 50-year tenure.
  • Implementing agency: NHSRCL (National High Speed Rail Corp.).
  • Expected commercial: 2027.

Future HSR proposals:

  • Delhi–Varanasi (via Ayodhya, Lucknow).
  • Delhi–Amritsar.
  • Mumbai–Nagpur.
  • Chennai–Bengaluru–Mysuru.
  • Delhi–Ahmedabad.

3. VANDE BHARAT EXPRESS PROJECT:

  • First train (Feb 2019): NDLS-Varanasi.
  • "Train 18" was development name (year 2018).
  • Manufactured by ICF Chennai.
  • All indigenous, "Made in India".
  • Top speed: 180 km/h (tested 220).
  • Distributed traction (EMU; no separate loco).
  • 40+ Vande Bharats by 2026.
  • Vande Bharat Sleeper (overnight version) — testing in 2026.
  • Vande Metro — short-distance regional (launched 2025).
  • Amrit Bharat Express — slower sister, with sleeper coaches for migrants (2023+).

4. KAVACH (indigenous Automatic Train Protection):

  • Developed by RDSO (Lucknow).
  • Earlier called TCAS (Train Collision Avoidance System).
  • Prevents:
    • Train collisions (head-on, rear-end).
    • Signal Passed At Danger (SPAD).
    • Speeding past designated limits.
  • Mechanism:
    • RFID tags on track.
    • GPS + radio communication.
    • Locomotive-mounted equipment auto-brakes if dangerous.
  • First major rollout: Delhi-Mumbai corridor (2024).
  • Target: install on 35,000 route km by 2027.
  • Approved for export internationally.

5. AMRIT BHARAT STATION SCHEME:

  • Launched: 2023.
  • Modernise 1,300+ stations in 5 years.
  • Features: clean toilets, AC waiting rooms, food courts, retail, parking, free Wi-Fi.
  • Stations in Phase 1: 506 (incl. Jaipur, Lucknow, Pune, Patna, etc.).
  • Cost: ₹25,000+ crore.

6. RAILWAY ELECTRIFICATION (100%):

  • Target announced: 100% electrification by 2024.
  • Achieved (broad gauge): 2024.
  • Saves ₹14,500 crore/year in fuel + emissions.
  • India: world's leader in pace of electrification (after China).

7. RAILMADAD (Helpline):

  • Toll-free: 139 (consolidated 2018; was separate numbers earlier).
  • Track complaints, medical aid, security on train.

8. INTEGRATED RAILWAY E-CATERING:

  • "Where is my food?" app under e-Catering.
  • IRCTC partners with Zomato, Swiggy for at-station / on-train delivery.
  • Order via mobile during journey.

9. STATION REDEVELOPMENT (PPP):

  • Major stations being redeveloped as world-class.
  • Models: Habibganj (Bhopal), Gandhinagar (Gujarat).
  • 50+ stations under redevelopment.

10. PRIVATIZATION INITIATIVES:

  • Bharat Gaurav trains: themed tourist trains (private operator runs, IRCTC franchises).
  • Tejas (private operator): IRCTC runs Tejas trains (Lucknow-Delhi, Mumbai-Ahmedabad).
  • Some routes auctioned for private trains (still partial).

11. DIGITAL INITIATIVES:

  • UTS app: book unreserved tickets via mobile.
  • NTES: real-time train tracking.
  • HRMS: internal HR digitisation.
  • IRCTC eCatering, eParcel, eWallet.
  • CRIS: behind all of these.

12. SOLAR INTEGRATION:

  • Solar panels on station rooftops.
  • Solar-powered DEMU train (Rewari Railway Station, 2017 — first).
  • Solar power plants at various railway lands.
  • Target: 5 GW solar by 2030.

13. INDUSTRIAL CORRIDORS LINKED TO RAILWAYS:

  • DMIC (Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor) — uses WDFC for freight.
  • Other corridors: Chennai-Bengaluru, Vizag-Chennai, Mumbai-Bengaluru, Amritsar-Kolkata.

EXAM HOOKS:

  • DFC: 2 corridors (Eastern + Western).
  • HSR Mumbai-Ahmedabad: 508 km, 320 km/h design, JICA-funded, NHSRCL.
  • Vande Bharat: Feb 2019 first; Train 18; manufactured at ICF Chennai.
  • KAVACH: indigenous ATP; replacing TCAS; from RDSO Lucknow.
