INDIAN RAILWAYS MANUFACTURING UNITS:

Indian Railways operates production units under direct administrative control. These manufacture coaches, locomotives, wheels, and components.

Currently operates 8+ major production units + many workshops.


COACH FACTORIES:

1. Integral Coach Factory (ICF) — Chennai, Tamil Nadu

  • Established: 1955.
  • Currently produces ~3,000 coaches/year.
  • Famous for: Vande Bharat Express (2018+), EMUs, MEMUs.
  • Phased out ICF-style coaches (older design); now makes LHB + Vande Bharat.

2. Rail Coach Factory (RCF) — Kapurthala, Punjab

  • Established: 1985.
  • Produces LHB coaches.
  • ~1,600 coaches/year.
  • Makes: AC coaches, double-decker, dining cars.

3. Modern Coach Factory (MCF) — Raebareli, UP

  • Established: 2011.
  • Most modern; targeted 3,000 coaches/year capacity.
  • Makes LHB coaches + Vande Bharat (partial).
  • Stainless steel coaches.

4. Rail Wheel Factory (RWF) — Bengaluru, Karnataka

  • Established: 1984.
  • Manufactures wheels and axles for locos, coaches, wagons.
  • ~2 lakh wheels/year.

5. Rail Wheel Plant (RWP) — Bela, Bihar

  • Established: 2012.
  • Smaller plant; supplements RWF Bengaluru.

LOCOMOTIVE FACTORIES:

6. Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) — Varanasi, UP

  • Renamed in 2020 (was Diesel Locomotive Works — DLW since 1961).
  • Currently produces: WAP-7, WAG-9 (electric locos).
  • Transitioned from diesel to electric production (~2017-2020).
  • ~250 electric locos/year.

7. Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) — Chittaranjan, West Bengal

  • Established: 1947 (operational 1950).
  • One of the oldest. Originally for steam locos.
  • Now makes electric: WAG-7, WAG-9, WAP-7, WAP-9, WAG-9H.
  • ~200-300 electric locos/year.

8. Diesel-Loco Modernisation Works (DMW) — Patiala, Punjab

  • Established: 1981.
  • Earlier: midlife overhaul of diesel locos.
  • Now: builds smaller diesel locos, hybrid locos.

9. Patiala Locomotive Works (PLW) — Patiala

  • Recently renamed from DMW. Specializes in modernization.

10. Madhepura Electric Loco Factory (MELF) — Madhepura, Bihar

  • Established: 2018 (JV with Alstom).
  • Manufactures WAG-12B — India's most powerful loco (12,000 HP).
  • 800 locos contract over 11 years.
  • For Dedicated Freight Corridors.

11. Marhowra Diesel Locomotive Factory (MDLF) — Marhowra, Bihar

  • Established: 2018 (JV with GE Transportation, later Wabtec).
  • Manufactures diesel locos for export and non-electrified routes.
  • 1,000 locos contract over 11 years.

  • MELF Madhepura also looks at exporting WAG-12B variants.
  • RITES is the export agency for railway equipment.
